The Bears have multiple needs on defense to fill in a draft that is heavy on offensive talent. A natural caution for general manager Phil Emery will be to ensure he doesn’t make a significant reach to add a defensive tackle, safety or cornerback while bypassing players with higher grades and more upside.
"It’s stronger on the offensive side," Vikings GM Rick Spielman said Tuesday when assessing the draft class.
The NFC North rival Vikings could be seeking defensive help themselves at No. 8 and might be a potential landing spot for Pitt defensive tackle Aaron Donald or perhaps a cornerback. Spielman could choose the third defensive player. The Lions also could be after secondary help at No. 10.
The safety class is considered weak as a whole, and that is why Emery said the Bears studied cornerbacks who potentially could be converted, an exercise that failed two years ago with third round pick Brandon Hardin. If the Bears take another shot at it, it’s likely to be with a pick in the later rounds.
The cornerback class looks strong. There are some solid first round options and depth throughout the draft, a plus for the Bears, who wanted to add a cornerback in last year’s draft and did not. Putting off that exercise a year might have been a good thing. When the Bears got around to looking at cornerbacks in the fifth round, they decided instead to go with Jordan Mills, who started all 16 games at right tackle in 2013.
NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock has 11 cornerbacks in his top 100 prospects and six in the top 30. His highest ranked cornerback is Virginia Tech’s Kyle Fuller, whom the Bears brought in for a visit and put through a private workout. Michigan State’s Darqueze Dennard and Oklahoma State’s Justin Gilbert also are rated high and the Bears might view a cornerback as a safer pick at No. 14 than a safety. Perhaps Emery believes that spot is a little too rich for Louisville’s Calvin Pryor or Alabama’s Ha Ha Clinton Dix.
If the Bears don’t get a cornerback in the first round, surely Emery will want to add depth in the first three rounds. With Charles Tillman, 33, on a one year contract and coming off a season in which he missed half the games, there is a pressing need for a starting caliber player.
If you don’t count Devin Hester, who was listed as a cornerback in 2006 but was drafted as a returner in the second round with the plan to switch him to offense from Day 1, the Bears have not used a pick in the first three rounds on a cornerback since Tillman was a second round selection in 2003. In the 10 drafts since, 122 corners have been drafted in the first three rounds.
No other team in the league has gone that long without picking one in rounds 1 through 3. Twenty four teams have used at least one first round pick on a cornerback, and the Bengals, Falcons and Jets all have used three.
The Bears, Eagles and Jaguars are the only three teams not to draft one in the top two rounds in the last 10 years. The Eagles selected one in the third round and the Jaguars drafted three in Round 3.

College scouting director Marty Barrett attended the pro day of Lindenwood’s Pierre Desir, a 6 foot 1, 198 pounder who performed well at the Senior Bowl.
Another big cornerback the team has done extra work on is Florida’s Jaylen Watkins, the older half brother of Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins. He is 5 111/2, 194 pounds and ran the 40 yard dash in 4.41 seconds at the scouting combine along with doing 22 reps at 225 pounds on the bench press. He also showed well in Senior Bowl practices and, according to a source, the Bears put Jaylen Watkins through a private workout. He and Desir could be targets in the third round.
